After a contested election, The land won 4-2 over disposablepuppetland.
The voter turnout was very low and disposablepuppetland was running mostly so it would be a contested election and not just a vote of confidence.
I kid you not...
disposablepuppetland wrote: I see The Land is already standing, so if you want a MoEA who will work hard and remember to do stuff on time, vote for The Land.

If, on the other hand, you want a MoEA who won't even remember to keep his nation active, leaves all the work to his deputy, and only logs in every once in a while to post gibberish in the Water Cooler, then vote for me.

My reasons for standing:
- I like being an admin.
- It's good to have some competition for places.
- I want a shiny badge under my avatar and a purple rhombus by my name.
The land hasn't made a mark as yet since the election, but we'll see what happens in the months to come.

Canada welcomes Acheron as the new ambassador for Ainur.
Canada has also received an embassy proposal from Great Britain and Eire.

As some of you know awhile back we lost a great member of our group: Jack Tarr.

Ministry of External Affairs
Canada's Minister of External Affairs has been MIA lately. We believe real life has consumed The Land.
But never fear...Matlida Love has stepped up and is in the running for this government position.

Canada welcomes Charles Sinclair as the new ambassador from United Kingdom.

Ministry of Internal Affairs
Matilda Love has resigned from the position of Internal Affairs to try something new...Minister of External Affairs.
disposablepuppetland and Almonaster have stepped up and are running for this government position.

Doughnuts & Beer
Doughnuts & Beer stirred a flurry of interest this month when ParrrrTay posted this Wikipedia article on The Valiant Five in the Canda XV thread.

It was fun to investigate this piece of Canadian history so close to Canada Day on July 1st.
Some of us had never heard of The Valiant Five. So, Shelter from the Storm busied himself with a mini survey in RL Canada.
He failed to discover anyone amongst his sample that had heard of these women, other than the remarkable Mrs Shelter of course.

Well, nobody is perfect of course.
Turns out we will always be a product of our era to a lesser or greater extent.
Was Judge Emily Murphy a racist? Some would say yes, some think we should give the era a break. Emily Murphy

Matilda Love was inspired to create her current avatar from the five. Here is an enlarged version:

Postcards from Canada
Canadian discussion is all abuzz around feasibility of construction of a space elevator in the Region of Canada.
The discussion was initiated by Matilda Love in the Map Updates and Requests thread, and quickly picked up by Esselldee, Stormaen, disposablepuppetland and Almonaster.

Such was the enthusiasm that disposablepuppetland began a Space Elevator thread in roleplay.
It looks as if there is a general consensus that the space port needs to be a joint venture amongst interested nations located in the Region of Canada.
We hope that the main station for this venture will be somewhere within or off the coast of Phoooey.
On our map, Phoooey can be located just south of the Canadian Region's equator, towards the east.

<- thank you Almonaster, for posting this picture of our Moon

There are some major technological and financial challenges for the region, but this cannot dampen our enthusiasm.
Most nations agree the port can in fact be located within the Region of Canada.
Devil Heart however is proposing a port be built on the Moon, believing this to be a less expensive and technologically more possible with regard to the structural strength of the elevator itself.

Facts from real life Canada:
On October 8th 1958, Swedish doctor Ake Senning successfully implanted the first pacemaker in a human. The device is based on technology pioneered by Canadian electrical engineer
Dr. John A. Hopps.

Great Bear lake is the largest lake entirely within Canada, having an area of 31,326 km² (Lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan are larger; but are shared with the USA).

The Nation States World Fair held earlier this month was attended by ParrrrTay, Almonaster and Matilda Love. We set up our own Canadian Booth where all visitors were able to pick up an NSC badge as a memento of their visit . We set up links to our off-site forum and provided a 'potted' history of Canada. A 'Guess Who' game thread allowed participants to earn themselves a variety of different Canadian themed badges.

January also saw the opening of an embassy for Yggdrasil, and a return to action in Wysteria. We are very pleased to welcome our wonderful new ambassador, CelestialMaple of Wysteria and the arrival of the marvellous Zybodia, visiting dignitary from Yggdrasil.

We also extend a warm welcome to four new and equally marvellous ambassadors from our established embassies. Please do make yourselves a little home away from home, Josh Sebastian of Europeia, TheUnitedSolarRepublic of The South Pacific, Sparaxis of The East Pacific, and last but certainly not least, sophistry of the British Isles

House of Commons

*Lively discussion has opened up over the addition of a 'Featured Nation' segment on the Regional Message Board. Everyone is keen but the fun is in the details!

Wysteria proposed a festival of Spring Games with Texas, Yggdrasil and Canada. We are looking forward to all the fun and are so very excited to have been invited to participate. Almonaster will be representing us on The Cross Regional Games Committee.

The initial enthusiasm over the new Regional Message Board poll feature has been 'taken over' lately by the 'Featured Nation' discussion. However judging by first responses, it looks like the occasional poll might be a fun idea. Alterrum has proposed an initial draft for a poll that will help us discover how many in Nation States Canada are also Canadian in real life.

A number of Regions with whom we hold Regional Message Board embassies have been inactive of late. A number of telegrams were sent requesting an update on interest in two regions.
Sadly our embassy with the Democrats has been closed due to inactivity on the part of this region. Happily however, relations with Wysteria are restored.
Relations with Global Right Alliance are still under investigation.
Alterrum noted that "it seems we have forum relations with the North Pacific and Europeia, but we don't have embassies with them in NS."
ParrrrTay responded by sending a request to each of these regions.

The weather this month on planet earth has been extreme, according to the Weather Channel at Standing Around the Water Cooler
To the north of the planet Michigan has been freezing over, while to the south we have been watching Gippsland burn.

Also featuring at the 1000 page thread in Standing Around the Water Cooler is an on going discussion about real life Pensions, Scottish Independence, a poem about kilts, Canadian secession, Australian States, Swiss bunkers, more on Australian states, and last but definitely not least, education. And don't forget it was Polar Bear Day this month, we have have a few posts up featuring the white fluff in the Polar Bear Survey for you to take a look at. All this, peppered with the usual quips and friendly jibes common to our region.

A discussion on the possibility of including a 'Featured Nation' in the WFE has been opened this month in the good ol' HoC.

The first is taken by ParrrrTay of the frozen skin crusting Lake St Clair in U.S.A.
The second was taken by Matilda Love of the sun through a smokey haze during the fires at Latrobe Valley in Australia.

We have a couple of new threads opened up.
The first is Artwork Challenge where our creative juices are challenged to produce images for us to share at regular intervals.

Billy the Kid has opened a 'Featured Nation' thread, where weekly entries featuring a Canadian nation are written and later posted on the WFE. Working through a few teething problems, but it will be up and running soon.

A couple of very classy events have been held at the Wysterian Embassy

A 'Featured Nation' will soon be included in the WFE, thanks to Billy the Kid for taking this one in hand, and to ParrrrTay for getting them posted.

We have received and invitation to participate with Wysteria in some sort of cross regional activity, still to be decided upon. Canadian citizens have been sharing their thoughts on what and how this might work, and be enjoyable for all.

House of Commons

Three of our long-standing political parties - the Canadian Sovereignty Party, the Fat Whales, and the People who throw Goats and Bagpipers - were archived due to lack of activity. Shortly thereafter a new party, the Eggplant Party of Canada was established.

We had a discussion of tightening ties with Wysteria. This largely focused on the possibility of a shared University. It was noted that we could make a start ourselves to have something to bring to the party. (see above)

We have a welcome up-turn in new members and activity. A note was issued explaining the main government offices and encouraging citizens to stand for office.

Science has taken front seat at the 'Real Life' and 'Role Play' threads this month in Canada.

In the Canadian Science Faction thread Alterrum posted this link to an article printed in Scientific American written by Paul J. Steinhardt that asks questions about how the universe might first have looked all those years ago. The art work for this article in beautiful - go take a look.
Almonaster posted a link to an article about a design NASA has for a warp drive ship and another article about a funky new material from the Karlsruhe Intitute of Technology that will render touch invisible.

In Role Play Canada continues to consider what each nation might be able to bring to the on going construction of our Space Elevator
Most of us watch and learn fascinated and try to think up ways we might be able to contribute, given our limited technological capabilities and knowlege.
DPL and Almonaster have presented for us the possibility of two types of tether.
One is a lighter weight structure that is potentially more maneuverable/replicable - but easily taken out with just one rogue hit, or go for the more complex twin linked structures that would provide protection to the vital inner cargo should there be a hit, and can also be repaired in part due to its 'segmented' design.
Almonaster wrote:After debating the merits of friction and maglev transport, a compromise proposal of friction drives to a transfer station above the atmosphere, followed by maglev to orbital levels was reached.
What do you think?
