Short Story Suggestions (The Rejected Book Club)
It's been a week since the last reading but because discussion is still ongoing, I thought we should create a separate thread for discussing book suggestions as well! For now I'll decide what we eventually read, just because it is less chaotic that way.
Those announcements are also to be seen here, but suggestions are of course more than welcome for short stories (for now!) that you might want to read and talk about later!

This comes down to about 9 pages but one of the best ones I've read so just floating it here in case people are interested:

Re: Short Story Suggestions (The Rejected Book Club)
I see that the number of pages is slowly increasing.
There's a handful of science fiction stories that I think provide food for thought: The Last Question, by Isaac Asimov, and The Star, by Arthur C. Clarke both have religious overtones (although the similarities end there), and Ray Bradbury's There Will Come Soft Rains is a reflection on the relationship between humans and the natural environment.
I would also recommend Carbon, by Primo Levi. It's taken from a mostly autobiographical collection ("The Periodic Table") where each chapter is named after a different chemical element that the plot revolves around in some way. While most other stories recount personal experiences (and I was tempted to pick the preceding one, Vanadium), this is the concluding chapter and departs a bit from that formula.
I also like the dreamlike A Country Doctor, by Franz Kafka, although it's not as easy to read.

I'm down for The Last Question, and Carbon and A Country Doctor seems interesting too!
If Cat is serious about Man and Technics and others are I'd actually be okay with it, too. (We'll make a non-fiction club for her!)

I would propose The Story of an Hour. It's not a symbolic piece like the ones that have been covered so far; it's more a character study, so it might lend itself better to a historicist discussion than a narratological one.

Very short, easy to get a head around.

I wrote a part of a book for my dissertation for university! I would love someone to read through it some time.

How does everyone feel about reading "The Last Question" by Isaac Asimov?
