The Future of Japan

EDITORIAL | WRITTEN BY JOHN LAURENS | EDITED BY THE REJECTED REALMS STAFF

International Accountability has had its place on NationStates since nearly the beginning of the game itself. One could look no further than the motto of the World Assembly Security Council, which reads “Spreading interregional peace and goodwill, via force if necessary” as a saying which can articulate the international community's attitude towards intervention in problematic regions. The question that has presented itself recently is “What do we do with regions of significance with problematic communities?”

Over the past two months, we have seen the international community conduct raids on Concord, a Confederacy of Layem backup region; the Confederacy of Layem itself; and Japan. all over the matter of unacceptable Out of Character behavior. While Concord and Confederacy of Layem were locked down, never to be inhabited by a government again, the raid on Japan has offered the possibility of a different outcome.

With a Do Not Defend order being issued by an assortment of different militaries, the occupying forces of Japan have free reign to do as they wish with the region. Some have brought of the idea of locking down Japan much like Confederacy of Layem, unable to be used for bigotry and discrimination again. This route provides the easiest way to ending the behavior seen by members of the old government, namely the former Delegate, and sends a message to other regions with a discrimination problem.

Others wish to see Japan refounded and handed to a neutral party to run a new community there. That action would lead to a new era for the region in regards to security and community, as any new founder would have free reign to administer the region as they please. This option would also allow more moderation of Japan’s offsite platforms under a trusted community member. However, this option means that, should said founder become untrustworthy, the region cannot be liberated easily.

There is a third option, however. Leave the region as is, and hand off the delegacy to a trusted figure. This option, while not the most secure, does ensure accountability of the new Delegate to the international community. The lack of a founder means that, if the region were to be unmoderrated or moderated poorly, the international community could invade the region to restore good behavior again, as they have done here. Not destroying the region makes it inherently easier to patrol, and a new, independent Delegate, allows the region to thrive in a new era. This option provides the same upswing as the refound option, but ensures that Japan stays on the right path.

The future of Japan now, regardless of how anyone feels about the raid, lies in the delegate, and the forces propping up the occupation. What they choose to do with that power, will soon be seen.
